If a horse is balanced and educated to cope with the terrain and situation and has been taught how to adjust its posture to be able to cope with a rider on board, it will feel safe to the rider.
If their training regime encourages relaxation and acceptance throughout each phase before moving onto the next, the horse will have a positive and cooperative outlook. For whatever level of riding and preferred discipline, this is the sort of horse you would choose to ride.
Zana currently trains horses of all breeds and disciplines. Whatever the end goal, the initial focus is on creating a balanced and willing partner who can cope with varied terrain and situations with their rider. By having to train horses in the past for pony trekking centers who need to be balanced “despite” their rider, Zana still puts this same practise into place in truly establishing balance even for horses who will have skilled riders on board.
Riders progress very quickly when they have a horse who reacts well to them and they feel they can influence easily, yet it’s also important that the horse is confident enough in its own skin to question rider errors and not be too reactive. And that is the main basis of our training at Great All Rounders; we create responsive horses and not reactive ones.
Initially all horses react to our cues, but a well trained horse, responds with a developed thought process behind it. That makes a “safe” horse.
Any horse purchased from GAR will have started its foundation training on day 1 of its life here and according to age and confidence will have continued on through the stages of training.
Horses sent to GAR for foundation training will be assessed and settled in but the horse itself will decide how long each stage of the training takes and so we make no promises of number of weeks for the job to be done. What we do promise is that regular accounts and video sessions will be taken and if geography allows, owners are welcome to be involved throughout the training and this way you will be most enabled to continue the training and to know where to drop back to, in the future if your horse gets confused and needs reminding of the basics.
Top up and pre-Event/Competition Training
You may want to send your horse for top up training. Those who have completed their foundation training here will get 20% discount rates, but that doesn’t mean that other horses can’t come for some further training or pre-show tune ups!
A well-trained horse has a greater chance to reach its potential and also it reduces chance of injury because correct training enables muscles to maintain their whole range of movement whilst they build in strength. Zana uses dressage to train the muscles to strengthen whilst keeping their elasticity.
Work done in the riding arena teaches horses to stretch, bend, round their backs up into the rider (rather than hollow) and encourages cadence and therefore suspension with each stride. This encourages horses to build their core strength through cross training before any specific discipline is focussed on, which should give the horse an economical way of moving (therefore increasing endurance) and also help reduce injury from overloading tendons and joints.
